People In Vietnam

The people in Vietnam consists of 54 various ethnic groups of which the Kinh (Viet) people constitute 90% of the population and the remaining 53 ethnic groups form the 10%. The different ethnic groups are the Ba Na ethnic group of 174,456 people occupying the provinces of Kon Tum , Binh Dinh and Phu Yen;Bo Y (Chung Cha, Trong Gia, Tu Di, Tu Din and Pu Na ) comprising 1,864 people living in the provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang; Brau (Brao) comprising 313 people living in Dak Me Village, Ngoc Hoi District and Kon Tum Province; Bru-Van Kieu consisting of 55,559 people occupying the mountainous regions of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien-Hue provinces;Cham ehnic group of 132,873 people living in the provinces of Ninh Thuan ,Binh Thuan ,An Giang, Tay Ninh, Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City;Cho Ro ethnic group comprising 22,567 people occupying provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Thuan, Binh Phuoc and Binh Duong.

The number of people in Vietnam is 84 million by the 2005 estimate. The ethnic Viet or Vietnamese people which forms the bulk of the population occupy the lowlands of Vietnam.The Chinese who lives in Southern Vietnam forms the greatest minority group of their country. The central highlanders (Montagnards or mountain people) consisting of the two ethnic groups namely Malayo-Polynesian and Mon-Khmer form the second largest minority group. The Khmer Krom (Cambodians) occupying the regions around the Cambodian border and the mouth of the Mekong River.75% of the population are settled in villages and majority of them are rice cultivators by profession.

The name Vietnam boat people were given to the large number of Vietnam refugees who escaped from Vietnam in small wooden boats from their country which was controlled by communists after the Vietnam War in the late 1970s. These people had to live in open seas day after day fighting with turbulent nature and facing inexplicable torture at the hands of the Thai pirates. They were given refuge in camps set up in Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. However, there was no relief there being tortured by the by the Thai guards.
