The French rule in Vietnam began in late 1800. The country was colonized by the French emperors leading to significant cultural and political changes in Vietnam. Though the country came under the rule French rule in 1858, they had to abandon Vietnam due to the resistance of the people. Vietnam under French rule went through several changes resulting in development in many areas.
Around 1862, the Vietnam king “Tu Dac” signed a treaty with the French rulers. In the Treaty of Saigon, it was mentioned that three Vietnam provinces would go under the rule of French emperors. In the year 1863, the governor of Cochinchina, Admiral de la Grandiere forced the Cambodian emperor to accept their dominion over the country. In late 1884, a huge number of French troops had already conquered several places in Vietnam. A movement “Can Vuong” was formed in late 1885 in Vietnam, to overthrow the French dominion. Bur the rebellion was subdued with exile of Ham Nghi.
The most significant change during the French dominion in Vietnam was the development in the education system. Vietnam under French rule witnessed huge economic growth in plantation with the export of indigo, tea, coffee and tobacco. During the French rule in Vietnam, much emphasis was laid on the adoption of Christianity and Western style education.
