Flag of Vietnam

The flag of Vietnam is rectangular in shape. The flag is red in color with a star emblazoned in the center of the flag. The star at the center is of tremendous significance. It is a symbol of unification. The star stands for the unity of the working class and the intelligentsia. The state promotes the unity of the workers, the peasants, the soldiers, the intellectuals and the youth of the nation. The star has been interpreted in two ways. During the days of Vietnam's struggle for independence the star stood for the unity of the classes. The red color as the background of the star is symbolic of bloodshed and revolution. But after the independence movement, the star was seen as the symbol of the Communist party and the red color in the backdrop signified the proletarian revolution. The national flag was modified from an earlier flag. It was declared as the official flag of Vietnam on the 30th of November 1955. In 1945, the then Vietnam President Ho Chi Minh signed an official decree, which took up and considered the red colored flag with a yellow star in the middle as the national flag. Finally, in the following year the National Assembly confirmed the adoption of this flag as the national flag. It was originally designed by a communist revolutionary, Nguyen Huu Tien, who took part in an uprising against French colonialists.
