Elections in Vietnam are held at the local and the national levels. The National Assembly of Vietnam comprises 498 seats. The members of the National Assembly are elected by popular franchise. The elected members serve a term of five years in the National Assembly. The National Assembly in turn elects the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for a five year term. The entire country is divided into electoral units comprising 158 multi member constituencies.
The citizens of Vietnam can cast their franchise once they have attained the age of 18. The criteria for participating in the Vietnam elections require the candidate to be of 21 years and above. The candidate should be a citizen of Vietnam. The list of nominated candidates for the elections in Vietnam is put forward by the Viet Nam Fatherland Front.
The elections in Vietnam are decided by an absolute majority vote. The population of the country determines the exact number of electoral units and the number of Deputies that are to elected. The number of Deputies elected for a certain electoral unit should not exceed three. A city or a province that is controlled by the Government at the center directly is allotted a maximum of three seats. The Vietnamese capital of Hanoi has been assigned 23 Deputies. If a particular seat becomes vacant at incumbency, then the seat goes for a by election. This happens only if the remaining period of the term is less than two years.
