Vietnam Industries

Contrary to the declining state of agriculture post reunification, Vietnam industries showed trends of emerging from an otherwise sorry state. But this rising graph was a temporary affair as Vietnam's attack on Cambodia and later China's attack on Vietnam further intensified the industrial crisis. The industrial infrastructure suffered a huge setback. Efforts to mend the damage in northern Vietnam included resurrecting workshops and factories. Southern Vietnam took steps to nationalize factories and banks to lend stability to the industrial sphere. The economic reforms of 1977 provided the scope for constructive production plans, effective organization of industrial resources and curtailment of production costs. In the years between 1981-1985 industrial development was unequally distributed. The industry which recorded the highest growth was that of food processing and paper products. There were heavy machinery industries as well. The northern part of the country is the base of several industries including tin and coal. It is also known for the mining industry. The southern part of the country abounds in consumer goods and light industries like food processing, textiles and pharmaceuticals. There is also a developing leather industry which managed to earn $1.55 billion in 2001. Vietnam is one of the leading exporters of leather goods. Other industries witnessing a gradual growth include rubber and construction.
