Wedding in Vietnam is one of the major occasions to be celebrated. The people of this country believe that the bond of marriage is very sacred. According to their belief in choosing a mate for marriage, fate or destiny plays a great role. The wedding date is set by an astrologer. The astrological signs of the couple are considered.
Wedding in Vietnam is an auspicious occasion when the bride and the groom receive blessings from the elders and good wishes form friends. The tradition shows that for girls the age of getting married ranges from 18 to 25 and for boys it is between 20 to 39. Vietnam society usually have arranged marriage. The family chooses the mates. But the bride and the groom have the right to state their opinion.
The groom or his mother bring pink chalk (reflecting a rosy future) and betel nuts to the bride's house. The relatives of the groom carry leather trunks filled with gifts to the bride's home. Two marriage ceremonies take place, first on the part of the bride's home and then on the part of the groom's home. The altar ceremony for the ancestors of the bride and the groom are done first in the house of the bride then in the house of the groom.
Vietnam wedding follow a few more rituals, such as the bride has to step over burning coals to prevent the entering of evil spirit. The parents of the groom invites an official mediator to solemnise the marriage, who asks the God of marriage to bless the bride and groom. He binds the couple with a red thread, which is then wrapped around the altar and the couple are considered to be married.
Wedding in Vietnam is celebrated by eating, drinking and merry making.
