Vietnam possesses one of the oldest societies in Southeast Asia. The traditional and cultural values are most respected in the villages. 74% of the population live in the villages. Therefore rural Vietnam is of much importance in terms of the culture, social practices, believes and rituals. In spite of being influenced by Westernization, the village life of Vietnam still pays great respect to their custom.
Rural Vietnam is inhabited mostly by the indigenous communities. The rural areas are less developed than the urban areas. Lack of infrastructure restrict the village people from working after nightfall. The livelihood of the rural people of Vietnam depends on the sale of natural products. The economy of the villages still depends on agriculture. However the government introduced the Doi Moi policy in 1986 to modernize and industrialize rural Vietnam. The basic technologies have not reached the villages of Vietnam.
One can find brick roads in the villages. Some of the houses are very old. The villagers engage themselves in trading fabric, weaving, making vermicelli, soy sauce. In spite of not having access to the modern technologies the village people enjoy life in their own way. They respect their ancestors. They gather at a place during marriage ceremonies or other occasions. Music and dance are integrated parts of their life. Even folk games like elephant race and buffalo stabbing are equally important to them. The village people lead a simple life.
