Gertrudis Goldschmidt, who is popularly known as Gego, is one of the most important and renowned artists of Venezuela. Gego has curved out a place of importance through her magnificent works. She is known for her line based creations such as printing, drawing and wire sculptures. Gego was born in Hamburg in 1912 and she reached Caracas in 1939 in order to escape the violence of the Nazis.
Creations of Gego
Gertrudis Goldschmidt achieved the degree of architecture from the University of Stuttgart. Her creations were made with products that are easily available and also cheap. Gego used wire, ropes, steel and other commonplace materials to shape up her imaginations. She made all her important creations using the concept of lines. It was her strong belief that working through line helps one to project or paint the invisible. According to her, line drawing and painting reflects the intangible and the imaginable. By using lines, she tried to project emotions, shadows and light in her works.
Objective of Gego
Two important objectives have been identified from all the important creations of Gego. Through her work, she had always tried to order and organize all forms of creative construction. On the other hand, she aimed at dissolving the distance between the creator and the observer.
The works of Gego has been described as ‘organic constructivism’ by Stanton Catlin, who is the director of the Center of International Relations.
