The country first began playing rugby in the late 1960s. But initially it did not attract the people much. The rugby lovers founded the rugby federation was formed in 2001. The federation tried various methods to steal the spotlight from other popular games in Uzbekistan. They arranged an international tournament for the first ever women’s rugby team. The team was known as the “Sogdiana”. The girls occupied 10th place among the 12 participating teams. But this participation of the international women’s team drew the attention of the countrymen for the first time. Since then, the performance of the Uzbekistan Rugby team has come a long way. This year the women’s team stood 6th in the same tournament.
The Rugby Union is trying to involve more youngsters in this game and their efforts are equally reciprocated by the next generation stars.
