The Republic of Uzbekistan emerged as a separate, independent identity after breaking away from the Soviet Union in August 1991. The newly formed constitution of Uzbekistan Republic stressed on bringing about major democratic reforms of the country.
The government of republic of Uzbekistan is based on the framework of presidential republic. The President of the State is recognized as both the Head of State and the Head of Government. The government implements the executive power. Legislative powers are vested on both the government and the two chambers of the parliament namely the Legislative Chamber and the Senate. Politics is Uzbekistan is mainly based of clan politics rather than on party membership.
The President of Uzbekistan republic is all powerful. The president is directly elected through elections for a five year term. He can consecutively be elected for two terms. He also enjoys the status of commander in chief of the armed forces. The President appoints the Prime Minister and the cabinet of ministers. He also holds the power to dissolve the parliament.
After its independence in August 1991, the republic of Uzbekistan joined the new 'Commonwealth of Independent States in December 1991. President Karimov was declared the President of Uzbekistan republic. The republic joined the Economic Cooperation Organization in February 1992.
The Republic of Uzbekistan underwent a gradual economic transformation. The economic transformation was towards a market – centered economic reform. Foreign investment was encouraged. Economic liberalization took place. In 1994, as a positive step to enhance the country's economy, Uzbekistan republic formed a single economic zone with neighboring Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Ties with Turkey were also strengthened. The economy of the republic of Uzbekistan suddenly gained a rapid momentum. Various industrial sectors were boosted. Major manufacturing industries were set up throughout the country with foreign collaboration.
The government of the republic in Uzbekistan also discouraged religious fundamentalism in every form. Strict measures were adopted to curb terrorism inside the country as well as in the neighboring countries.
The Republic of Uzbekistan is undergoing consistent development with every passing year. In spite of all the hurdles it is marching ahead on the path of progress and prosperity.
