The growing industry of telecommunications in Uzbekistan plays an important role in the economy of the country. Earlier the telecommunication industry in Uzbekistan was not as developed as it is today. Prior to its independence the telecommunication sector of Uzbekistan was controlled by the state. Since the independence of the country, Uzbekistan has made remarkable improvements in the telecommunications industry. Uzbekistan telecommunications has achieved success in upgrading its fixed telephone system .There has also been introduction of new wireless networks.
After independence, regional production communication departments were rebuilt to electrical and post communications. This resulted in the growth of the independent agents and enterprises. The owner of the fixed line services mainly provides the fixed telephone line services. All the regions of Uzbekistan are connected through Tashkent via high speed communication lines.
Mobile telephony penetration in the country is stronger than the fixed telephony penetration. Buzton in Uzbekistan is the only alternative fixed line services. Set up in 1995 Buzton provides digital telephonic services. Earlier the company used to provide Internet access services but presently it has become a provider of integrated communication services.
Cellular communication is a part of the telecommunications in Uzbekistan and has become one of the highly competitive business areas in the country. Cellular phone services are provided by seven operators. Uzdunrobita,Cosmos and Unitel are biggest cellular phone operators in Uzbekistan.
