Russian Colonization in Uzbekistan

Russian Colonization in Uzbekistan is an event of the nineteenth century. During this time, the Russians decided to spread their empire across Central Asia. The Russian Colonization in Uzbekistan was interrupted several times by the British who had also come to the country with similar intention. The long history of the efforts of these two nations to capture this area is popularly known as “The Great Game”. In the early years of 19th century, major portions of Uzbekistan including the cities like Bukhara, Merv, Khiva and Kokand were unknown to the Russians. But later in the early 20th century, Uzbekistan as well as parts of Central Asia was under the control of Russia. When the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia, Uzbekistan and the other countries of Central Asia became a part of the Soviet Union.

Russian Colonies in Uzbekistan affected the country’s relation with Russia. The country’s foreign policies, therefore, fluctuated widely, which exacerbated Russia’s internal problems like allowing dual citizenship to the Russians in Uzbekistan and so on. But in the post-Soviet period, the Uzbek links with Russia and former members of Soviet republic. Uzbekistan signed several economic treaties with Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. These Uzbekistan treaties with Russia and other countries secure the national security of this central Asian country.
