Uzbekistan is ruled by the authoritarian president. The President of Uzbekistan holds the highest post of executive power in this country. But practically outside the executive branch, he has very little power. The President of Uzbekistan is elected for a seven year term. Previously, this term was only for five years. The president is appointed by the prime minister and other cabinet ministers based on the majority vote. The prime minister and the cabinet ministers are considered as the supreme power of the government of Uzbekistan.
There are certain criteria which should be fulfilled by a citizen in order to get nominated for the post of president of Uzbekistan. . Any citizen who is aged above thirty five years is eligible for nominating himself for this post. The person must know the state language very well and has to be a resident of Uzbekistan for at least ten years. The president of Uzbekistan cannot hold his post for more than two terms. According to the official declaration, the presidential election of Uzbekistan is based on equal, universal and direct suffrage by secret ballot. The electoral laws of this country govern the entire process of the presidential election.
The current president of Uzbekistan is Islom Karimov. He has been serving as the president of Uzbekistan since 1991 till 2007.
