Uzbekistan and Commonwealth of Independent States

Uzbekistan and Commonwealth of Independent States share a good relation and understanding. The Commonwealth of Independent States or CIS is a community of some independent nations who united under the basis of sovereign equality at Minsk in Belarus. The event took place on 8th December, 1991 and the first three signatories were Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The inclusion of Uzbekistan in Commonwealth of Independent States took place a few days later between 8th and 21st December.

The organization functions as a successor to USSR and co ordinates the economic and foreign policies. So the Uzbekistan and Commonwealth States relationship plays a significant role in the economy and politics of this country. Uzbekistan enjoys the free market economy as a member of CIS. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have decided to establish an economic consolidation without any restrictions of customs. Tajikistan later became a member of this union. The foreign relation of Uzbekistan and Commonwealth of Independent States has also improved the Uzbek relations with Russia. The problems of giving the Russians in Uzbekistan a dual citizenship or the debate regarding the gold reserves in Uzbekistan are now gradually resolving. There are new trade treaties and military agreements have been signed between Russia and Uzbekistan as well. Thus Uzbekistan and other members of CIS are working on marinating the political and economical harmony among them.
