Glaciers in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is a highly glaciated land. More than 16 million square kilometers or 11 % of all terrestrial land of Uzbekistan is occupied by glaciers. During the recent years the glaciers in Uzbekistan are receding due to global warming.

The scientific surveys show that the Uzbekistan glaciers consist of more than 27 million cub. km of moisture. According to the survey the level of oceans would be raised approximately by 66 meters if all the glaciers of Uzbekistan melt.

The largest glaciers of the country are the valley glaciers located on the mountains of Central Asia in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan consists of 547 glaciers covering a total area of 231 square kilometers. Largest of them are Barkrak and Ayutor in Tashkent. The Severtsev glacier in Kashkadarya region is also considerably large. The number of glaciers in Uzbekistan is much more than that in Kyrgyzstan. The main rivers that are fed by the glaciers of Uzbekistan are Amu Darya, Chirchik and Zarafshan.

Glaciers in Uzbekistan are the invaluable gift of nature providing adequate water for cotton, vegetable and rice plantations and also waters the gardens in the country. These glaciers are the continuous source of fresh water to the lowlands that facilitate the economic activity of the country.
