Uzbekistan telecommunications, as an industry has grown and evolved after the country's independence. Government has taken special care to upgrade and update the telecommunications system of Uzbekistan. Positive structural changes were made in this regard.
Before the independence the telecommunication sector of Uzbekistan was a total state monopoly. After the country's independence the first positive step of the government was to privatize the telecommunication sector in Uzbekistan.
The Uzbektelecom is the main service provider of fixed lines. The company holds a monopoly on international voice services like Voice over Internet Protocol. Government is making earnest effort to privatize Uzbektelecom since 1999. Buzton is another major player in providing fixed line service. The Uzbektelecom owns a little less than half of the shares of Uzbektelecom. Since 1999, Buzton also provides integrated communications services to major corporate clients. It approximately has 10,000 subscriber numbers and 22 access points in the capital city of Tashkent.
Mobile penetration in Uzbekistan is comparatively less. It is one of the highly competitive areas of the Uzbek economy. In total, there are seven operators in Uzbekistan. The Unitel, Coscom and Uzdunrobita JV are the most reputed ones.
Dial-up-connection, web hosting, opening mailboxes and VPN (virtual private network) are the common internet facilities in Uzbekistan. Approximately, there are 635 internet service providers in the country.
Telecommunications in Uzbekistan has undergone a massive change after it's independence. It plays a critical role in the development of the country.
