A passport is an internationally valid travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the holder. In the US, the US Department of State has the authority to grant, issue or verify United States passports.

In the US, passport application can be made either at the 13
passport agencies or over 6,000
passport acceptance facilities . If the applicant is applying for the first time, he/she must appear in person (for a minor under age of 14 years, both his/her parents should be present along with him/her, and both should give consent).
Documents Required :
- Application Form DS-11
- Proof of US citizenship (by means of birth certificate or naturalization certificate)
- If the applicant does not possess a previous U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate, he/she needs to produce: letter of no record, baptismal certificate, hospital birth certificate, census record, etc.

- Proof of identity
- Passport photographs (2 of them). The photos should be of size 2 x 2 inches, identical, color or black and white, shot in ordinary street attire with full face visible
- Application Fee ($ 82 for those below 16 years and $ 97 for those of 16 years and above) [fees are to be submitted in the form of personal checks, demand drafts, money orders, or in soma cases by means of exact cash). An additional fee of $ 60 will be required for an expedited service of passport application and delivery
- Social security number
- When applying for a minor below the age of 14 years, additional documents, such as: evidence of the child's relationship with the parents (for instance, US birth certificate with the names of both parents), parental identification (for instance, both parents' passports), and present parental application permission documentation (for which either both parents come and sign, or either of the two signs and submits the other's Statement of Consent, Form DS-3053 authorizing passport issuance for the child)
