The immigrant visa is obtained by those who immigrate to the US on a permanent basis. The United States Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) is issued to such an immigrant to the United States (and who does not have US citizenship) to permanently reside and take employment in the US. Immigration law also provides ways to a lawful permanent resident (LPR), to bring his/her spouse, children and sons/daughters to the United States.

Nonimmigrant ( V ) visa for spouse and children to travel to the United States to wait for processing of the immigrant visa.
Non Immigrant Visa :
Transit Visa is for those who are traveling through the US to each some other country as the final destination ( C 1 Visa is for general non-US citizen; C 2 Visa is for foreign national on official trip; and C 3 Visa is for foreign government officials transiting on official grounds). Visitor/Tourist Visa is for those who are visiting the US for short-term business purpose or for pure travel and tourism or for medical treatment ( B 1 Visa is meant for those who intend to visit the US for business purposes; and B 2 Visa for those who visit the US as pure tourists for pleasure or for medical treatment). Temporary Worker Visa is for those who would visit the US for temporary employment ( H 1A and H 1 C Visas are meant for registered nurses to visit US for temporary employment, H 1 B Visa is meant for Specialist Knowledge Workers, H 2 B is meant for temporary non-agricultural workers, H 3 Visa is meant for trainees [excepting medical or academic], and H4 Visa is meant for spouse or dependents of H 1A, H 1B, H2 or H 3 Visa holders). Fiancé(e) Visa is for foreigner fiancé(e) of US citizens who would visit the US for purpose of marriage ( K1 Visa is meant for foreign-born fiancé/fiancée of an American citizen who intends to visit the US for purpose of marrying). Religious Visas ( R 1 Visas ) for those who are involved with a legitimate religious denomination for at least two years and have job offers in the US to work for an affiliate of the same religious organization.
Visas for people with extraordinary abilities in sciences, arts, education, business, etc. ( O-1 Visa ). The O-2 visa is issued to the support personnel of the O-1 visa holders.
Visas for people working in an exchange program, for practical training and work ( Q Category Visa ). This is different from the J-1 Category Visa which is more for educationally-oriented programs.
