The H category Visa to the US is meant for all those who intend to immigrate as temporary workers. Of the various types of H visas, the H2B visa USA allows employers to hire foreign workers to and perform temporary nonagricultural work in the US. Up to 66,000 such visas are issued each year. However the employer must prove that there are no unemployed workers in the US capable to do the work. The duration of the visa is subject to the employer's need but the maximum timeframe is one year. However, the employer on grounds of necessity can extend the duration of the visa up to three years. Besides, if the prospective worker is already in the US and intends to change from one nonimmigrant status to another, a visa is not required. On the other hand, if the worker leaves the US and wants to re-enter, she/he may need a visa. In case the family members of the H 2 B visa holder want to accompany him, his/her spouse or unmarried child below 21 years of age is issued an H-4 visa.
The immigration on H2B visas can occur on basis of:
Recurring seasonal need;
Intermittent need;
Peak-load need; and
One time occurrence.
When to file :
Petitions should be filed at least six months before the proposed employment begins and they should also be submitted at least 45 days before the commencement of the employment.

Copy of Notice of Approval of H-2B Petition
Passport
One passport-size photo
Evidence of ties to the home country (family, property, current occupation, etc.)
