Immigrant Visa :
An immigrant visa is available to one who wishes to enter the United States to reside there permanently. The US immigration law issues immigrant visas in four categories, such as: immediate relatives, family based, employment based and Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (also called the "green card" lottery).
The Immigrant Visa (IV) Unit of the US Embassy in Paris receives general inquiries in person and requests for information on Fridays only. From September 1st, 2006, the working hours will change from 9:00 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Non Immigrant Visa :
France is one of those countries which are certified for the Visa Waiver program by the US authorities. Any French citizen holding a French emergency passport is eligible to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), for tourism or business for up to a period of 90 days with a round trip ticket.

Documents Required :
Permanent Employees
Letter from employer on original letterhead, stating duration of employment, basic monthly salary, etc. In case the applicant is traveling on business, his/her letter should give detail on the nature of business, including US companies or offices intended to be visited.
Account Holders
Bank or investment statement of last least three months.
Self-Employed Applicants
A statement on applicant's own letterhead apart from independent evidence of self-employment, such as a detailed letter from the bank which handles his/her business account.
Farmers
Evidence of ownership of farm (a copy of bank letter).
Students and Scholars
A letter from an institution official clearly stating applicant's level of study, period of travel and intent to return and complete his/her studies.
Unemployed Spouses
Letter from his/her husband/wife's employer or marriage certificate.
Procedure for application :
1. Making an appointment with the US Embassy for appearing for personal interview
2. Assembling all documents including:
- Valid passport
- One recent photograph
- Appropriate applications (like Forms DS-156, DS-157, DS-158, etc.)
- Supporting documents like those detailing employment, reason for travel, and financial status
- Proof of payment of application fee (Fee for machine readable visa is 85 euros, while for H1B and L Visas, $500 will be charged. There is however no Reciprocity fee for French visitors) at any French post office (applicant must obtain a Mandat-Compte, account #2006L)
- A self-addressed Chronopost envelope to return the applicant's passport if the visa is issued
3. Bringing application and supporting documents to the Consulate on the scheduled day of appointment/interview.
