A new law passed in 2006 forced all unaccredited institutions to make a choice: move out of the state, close down, or apply for accreditation. The state currently has only one public four-year institution.

University of Wyoming is a land-grant university. It was established in September 1866 and is situated on Wyoming's high Laramie Plains. It comprises seven colleges: agriculture and natural resources, arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and applied sciences, health sciences, and law. It offers more than 190 undergraduate, graduate, and certificates, programs. It also offers cultural and social activities. The university enrolls approximately 13,657 students annually.
Casper CollegeCasper College is located in Casper, Wyoming. It is a public community college established in 1945. It enrolls approximately 4,000 students and has about 250 faculty members. The Tate Geological Museum is located on the south end of the campus. Some of the notable alumni of the college are: former US Vice President Dick Cheney, Wayne Hunter, and Chris LeDoux.
Central Wyoming CollegeCentral Wyoming College, CWC, is located in Riverton, Wyoming. It is a community college and includes off-campus sites in Wyoming at Jackson, Lander, Thermopolis, Dubois, and the Wind River Indian Reservation. Founded in 1966, CWC is famous for its Associate Degree Nursing program. It also offers variety of programs and services to students, business and community members of all ages.
Laramie County Community CollegeLaramie County Community College, LCCC, is located in Laramie County, Wyoming. It is a full-service community college and was established in 1968. The college offers more than 80 associate degrees and more than 30 certificates of completion. In the academic year 2008-09, annual enrollment was 4,000. The college has its own art gallery, The Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery.
