West Virginia is one of the fastest growing states in the United States. The state had a gross domestic product of $66,600 million in 2010, while the per capita income stood at $32,641. The unemployment rate was estimated at 9.3% in 2011.
Mining, health care and education, media and telecommunications, manufacturing, forestry, aerospace, hospitality, tourism, retail, banking, and agriculture are the major sectors/industries in the state of West Virginia.
Mining is a significant part of the economy of the state. It is the largest producer of coal in the United States. Oil, crushed stone, and natural gas are also mined.
West Virginia produces a great amount of electricity; it has the largest export business of electricity in the nation.
West Virginia has some of the best bio-tech industries in the United States. The major corporations include BASF and Bayer of Germany, DuPont, PPG, Dow, Mylan Inc.,and Alcon.
Agriculture is also practiced in the state with apples, peaches, corn, hay, soybeans and tobacco, eggs, dairy products, and turkeys being the major agricultural products.
The state levies a consumer sales tax of six percent. There is also a provision of collecting property taxes of which only a small portion goes to the state government. The state does not impose any inheritance tax.
