State Police

The Virginia State Police agency is the state-run agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia which looks after the security of the state. The state police agency was established in the year 1919 but organization
gained the prestigious accreditation from Virginia's government in 1986. Ever since receiving this accreditation, the Virginia State Police agency has looked forward to retaining its superior law enforcement policies.

The Virginia Sate Police owes its origins to the Automobile Acts that were originally issued in the year 1919 and ruled that theft of motor vehicles was a felony. Subsequent to the passing of this law, the Commissioner of Motor vehicles and his assistants started enjoying the total powers of a sheriff. Exemplary work of the Virginia State Police earned it the coveted accreditation from the government, immediately after which the Virginia State Police decided to start an unique and first-of-a-kind state drug awareness program.

This unique drug awareness program aimed at spreading the anti-drug messages to the youth of the state through various programs. In a first-of-a-kind move, uniformed policemen entered school classrooms to impart first-hand awareness to the students. In 1995, Virginia State Police department underwent some radical changes in its structure. Some such changes included the shifting of the office of Internal Audit to the office for professional standards. There is a special Virginia State Police Association which had been formed on the December of 1974, its main purpose is to remain mutually loyal and helpful to all members of the association. Today, however the association, also performs added functions of helping members with scholarships, grants and other funds.
