Virginia is the oldest and historically the most significant state in the US, in the modern day, the Commonwealth of Virginia is also commercially and politically the most significant state of the south. Hence, the numerous Virginia newspapers have a major role to play in informing the people, about the latest events happening across the US and in the state.

It is the Virginia Press Association which is headquartered in Richmond that is responsible for providing the General Assembly a daily statistics of all Virginia newspapers. In addition, this historical association established in 1881 is also responsible for representing the interests of various Virginia newspapers through its lobby. This association is equally responsible for promoting free press in the democratic set-up of Virginia. The association hosts quite a popular competition on editorial works, news articles and photography.

There are a host of Virginia newspapers, all of whom are responsible for providing Virginians with updated information on regional politics, entertainment, business investments and other social issues. Each county and city of Virginia is synonymous with one or two newspapers, those that are most popular in the area. Just as in Alexandria, the Alexandria Gazette Packet and The Alexandria Times are popular. The other statewide newspapers include, Al-Nashra USA, Annandale Times, Burke Times, The Post, Virginia Islands Source, Washington Hispanic and Washingtonian Magazine among others. The Virginia Pilot newspaper, an online newspaper operating in the Virginia Beach and Norfolk area, is considered to be the most-browsed of all Virginia Beach newspapers.
