Virginia Home

Virginia Home was the first-of-its-kind residential care unit in the Commonwealth.
Today its contribution to society has even been recognized by the state government which sanctions this private, non-profit organization under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The model institution started way back in 1894, solely devoted to the care of elderly citizens with irrevocable physical disabilities, and with time has transformed into an icon for other institutions on similar patterns.

Virginia Home would not have established if Mary Tinsley Greenhow had not experienced a physical injury early in life, and not felt compassion for others with similar deformities. Miss Greenhow experienced deformity for life after she fell off her horse in the mid 1800's and was quick to understand that not all people were as fortunate as her to receive financial assistance for life. It was for those unfortunate many that Mary Greenhow established the Virginia Home.

Over its 100 year long history Virginia Home underwent several administrative changes and locality changes and today it is home to over 130 adult and disabled men and women. The Home is responsible for providing a lifelong shelter and support to individuals who reside within its premises and continues to do so irrespective of the fact whether these individuals can provide for their upkeep or not. Virginia Home is a complete emotional, financial and security support for adults seeking shelter under it. In order to receive assistance form Virginia Home, the potential recipient must necessarily have a lifelong physical deformity and should necessarily be 18 years of age.
