The Commonwealth of
Virginia government and politics is based on the universal federal system of government that is followed throughout the USA. According to the federal structure of government, Virginia state government is based on the collaborative working
of 3 separate departments of the government, the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. Virginia government is strictly based on the government structure that has been outlined in the Constitution of the USA. Virginia politics is thus based on these 3 departments that design, administer and interpret laws that govern the state.
The executive branch of the government of Virginia consists of the Governor, the Lieutenant General, the Governor's cabinet, the Attorney general and the state agencies. The legislative branch of the Virginia government consists of the general assembly along with the Auditor of public accounts and the Joint legislative audit and review commission. The judicial branch of Virginia consists of the Supreme Court of Virginia under whose jurisdiction come the regional courts and the Virginia State bar. There are certain other departments of Virginia like the Lottery department, Virginia retirement system and the State corporation commission, which are independent entities working within the structure of
Virginia government and politics.
