There are a number of prestigious colleges, institutes, and universities in the state of Vermont. The Castleton College is the oldest college in the state.

There are twenty-three colleges and universities in Vermont including one research university, six master's universities, and other private and baccalaureate colleges. The University of Vermont is the flagship public university and the biggest in the state. Landmark College is the most recent college in the state, founded in 1984. It is a special college created to serve students with learning disabilities.

The University of Vermont: One of the oldest colleges in the United States, the University of Vermont was founded in 1791. It is also known as the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. It is a public research university with the main campus in Burlington. The major courses offered by the university are: agriculture, life sciences, social sciences, business administration, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and nursing. There are over 11,000 students enrolled in the institution supported by a staff of 1,185 members. John Bramley is the interim president.

Castleton State College: Located in Castleton, Vermont, the Castleton State College is a public liberal arts college. It is the oldest college in the state founded in 1787. The college has an enrollment of 2000 students supported by an academic staff of 134 members. The major courses offered are arts, business administration, philosophy, psychology, social sciences, gender studies, and natural sciences. David S. Wolk is the president of the college.

Johnson State College: Located in Johnson, Vermont, the Johnson State College is a small public liberal arts college. It was founded in 1828 by John Chesamore. The major programs offered by the college include natural sciences, business, fine arts, education, mathematics, literature, health sciences, literature, and hospitality and tourism management. The institution has an enrollment of 1,759 students. Barbara E. Murphy is the president.
