Historically Black Universities in the States. Built by the
Texas Legislature on March 3, 1947, this university in Texas has gained a pioneering stature in the field of education. It was first named as
Texas State University for Negroes but was later renamed. Having been owned by the
Houston Independent School District or the
HISD, it was also known as Houston College for Negroes.
