The Commissioner of Education together with fifteen members of the State Board of Education monitors and implements the education system in Texas. Duties of the State Board of Education
Comprised of fifteen members each elected from district State board of Education, it adopts rules and programs that govern Texas public schools. The Commissioner is the chief executive officer of the board, and administers through the Texas Education Association..
The State Board of Education oversees an education system that comprises over 1200 school districts, around 8,000 campuses, almost 600,000 educators and above 4.5 million school children. The board works out plans that are implemented over a 4-year period.
The State Board of Education takes care to provide a well-balanced curriculum for the public schools. It determines pass marks for assessment programs in the schools.
The State Board of Education supposedly meets at least once in a quarter. Most of the meetings are open to the public and are held at William B. Travis State Office Building at 1701 North Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas.
The Instruction Committee has the responsibility in issues pertaining to syllabus, test procedures and methods, vocational and special education methods. Social promotional programs are drawn up by the Committee on Instruction.
Issues relating to school funds and special educational and vocational programs are undertaken by the Committee on School Finance.
Charter schools, long run plans for public education are assignments taken care by the Committee on School Initiatives.
The Texas Department of Education makes public the agenda of all its meetings. It is open to suggestions from all members of the populace.
