Department of Criminal Justice



Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TBCJ) is governed by the Texas Board of Criminal Justice (TBCJ). The Texas Board of Criminal Justice is a nine member board ( including a chairperson ) appointed for a term of six years by the Governor of Texas. All the nine members are non-salaried. The TBJC appoints an Executive Director, who looks after the daily operation and administration of Department of Criminal Justice in Texas.

The Criminal Justice Department in Texas is made up of the following divisions:
  • Community Justice Assistance
  • Correctional Institutions
  • Parole
  • Rehabilitation and Reentry Programs
  • Texas Correctional office on offenders with medical or mental impairments
  • Victim Services
  • Private facility contract monitoring
  • Administrative review and risk management
  • Human Resources
  • Health Services
  • General Counsel
A separate division of TDCJ, the Business and Finance division reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer. The Chief Financial Officer also looks after the Information Technology division, the Facilities division, and the Manufacturing and Logistics division.

Community Justice Assistance, Correctional Institutions, and Parole divisions together constitute the 'offender management' section of TDCL.

Rehabilitation and Reentry, Victim Services, and Texas Correctional office on offenders with medical or mental impairments are the special Programs undertaken by TDCJ.
