Ellsworth Air Force Base is the second-largest single employer in the state.

In 2010, the gross state product of South Dakota was US$ 39.8 billion, while its per capita personal income was $38,865. Service sector contributes significantly to the economy of the state.
Service industry includes retail, finance, and health care. Government spending also contributes to more than 10% of the gross state product. In 2008, 12.5 % of the population was below the poverty line. The unemployment rate of the state in July 2011 was 4.7%.

South Dakota has the lowest state tax in the country and was listed seventh in CNBC's list of "Top States for Business for 2010". The sales tax is 4%, while there is no personal or corporate income tax, inheritance tax, or tax on intangible personal property.

Agriculture has been a primary contributor to the economy of South Dakota. Agricultural outputs of the state include cattle, corn, soybeans, wheat, and hogs. It is ranked sixth in the US in the production of ethanol. Tourism is also an important sector. The state is known for its national and state parks. It also provides jobs to more than 33,000 people.
