There are many colleges and universities in New York. At the college level, the State University of New York (SUNY) is the statewide public university system. It is the biggest public university system in the U.S. The public university system of New York City is the City University of New York (CUNY). The State University of New York system is made up of 64 technical colleges, community colleges, universities and undergraduate colleges. The four university centers are Binghamton University, University at Albany, Stony Brook University and University at Buffalo.
Besides these, there are a number of distinguished private universities, which include Fordham University, the oldest Catholic institute in the Northeast. The state is home to both Cornell University in Ithaca and Columbia University in New York City, making it the only state to have more than one Ivy League school. The service academy of the U.S. Army, West Point, is situated on the banks of the Hudson River, just to the south of Newburgh.
