The system comprises two doctoral-granting research universities, one state college, four community colleges and one research institute. It has an enrollment of about 98,000 students.
University of Nevada-Las Vegas: Located in the Las Vegas area of Paradise, Nevada, the University of Nevada is a public, coeducational university. It was established in 1957. The university offers degrees in architecture, medicine, hotel administration, law, and engineering. About 28,203 students enroll in the institution each year supported by a faculty of 1000 members. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching deemed the University of Nevada a "research-intensive university." Neal J. Smatresk is the president.
Sierre Nevada College: Founded in 1969, Sierre Nevada College is a private, liberal arts university. The major courses offered by the college are entrepreneurship, environmental science, computer science, technology, business administration, English, ski business and resort management are the major courses offered. Richard Rubsamen is the president of the college.
Nevada State College: Established on September 3, 2002, the Nevada State College is a four-year public college. It is located in Henderson, Nevada and is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education. It has an enrollment of 2,964 students supported by an academic staff of 66 members. Nursing, liberal arts, psychology, biology, English, history and criminal justice are some of the courses offered. Dr. Lesley DiMare is the president.
