There are a number of public and private universities in Missouri. University of Missouri , Lincoln University, Truman State University, and Maryville University are some of the major universities in the state.

The state of Missouri has sixty-seven post-secondary institutions, including thirteen public universities, thirty-nine private 4-year institutions, and thirteen community colleges. Missouri has a state university system known as the University of Missouri System. Created in 1963, the university provides distance learning and other educational initiatives statewide. The headquarters of the system are located in Columbia. There are more than 64,000 students currently enrolled at the four campuses of the University of Missouri System.

Some of the major public and private universities in Missouri are: Missouri State University, Lincoln University, University of Central Missouri, Saint Louis University, Fontbonne University, Webster University, and William Woods University. In addition, Missouri also has a number of community colleges. The major ones are: East Central College, Ozarks Technical Community College, Jefferson College, St. Charles Community College and Cottey College.

Missouri State University: Established on March 17, 1905, the Missouri State University is public university located in Springfield, Missouri. It is the second-largest university in the state, with an initial enrollment of 18,748 students in 2011 supported by an academic staff of 1,015 members. Clifton Smart is the interim president of the university. The major courses offered by the university include art and design, communication, English, media, journalism and film, theatre, music and dance, fashion, finance, management, marketing, technology, astronomy, hospitality and anthropology.

Truman State University: A public liberal arts and sciences university in Missouri, United States, Truman State University is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. It is named after President Harry Truman. About 6,000 students enroll in the university and the academic staff comprises 344 members. The University offers degrees in forty-three undergraduate and nine graduate programs. Troy Paino is the president.

Saint Louis University: Located in St. Louis, Missouri, Saint Louis University is a private, co-educational Jesuit university. It was founded in 1818 by Louis Guillaume Valentin Dubourg and is the second-oldest Jesuit college in the United States. Currently there are 13,313 students representing all fifty states in the university. The academic staff consists of 1,002 members. The major courses offered by the university include engineering, aviation, technology, medicine, social work, finance, business and law. Father Lawrence Biondi, S.J., is the president.
