The Commonwealth of Massachusetts houses 301 towns and 50 cities, categorized into 14 counties.

The 14 counties, progressing from east to west are Nantucket, Dukes, Barnstable, Plymouth, Bristol, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Middlesex, Worcester, Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire. Eleven neighborhoods which are known as "towns" are, by statute, cities because they have switched the local government type of administration with a manager-council or mayor-council arrangement.
