It consists of seven universities and nine University College regional outreach centers. Established in 1968, the university system aims at providing high-quality education and undertaking creative and innovative projects to improve the quality of life.
The major universities of the state are:University of New England: Located in Biddeford and Portland, the University of New England is an independent, co-educational university. It was founded in 1939 at Biddeford by Father Decary and the Franciscan friar of St. Andre's parish. The university has an enrollment of 7,330 students annually with a faculty of 295 members. The major courses offered are marine science and neuroscience, humanities and public health. Danielle N. Ripich is the president.
University of Maine: The flagship university of Maine, the University of Maine is a public research university located in Orono, Maine, United States. It was established in 1865 as a land grant college. It is the only institution to be categorized as a research university. The institution has an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students supported by a staff of 720 members. Developmental psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, behavioral neuroscience, biomedical science, and engineering are among the major academic programs the unversity offers. The president of the university is Paul W. Ferguson.
Central Maine Community College: Located in Auburn, Maine, Central Maine Community College is one of the seven colleges in the Maine Community College System. It was founded in 1963 as Androscoggin State Vocational Institute and changed its name to Central Maine Community College in 2003. The institution offers a number of courses that include accounting, architectural and civil engineering, business, computer applications, electronics, robotics, liberal arts, and nursing. Scott E. Knapp is the president of the college.
