Kansas is the eighth-largest producer of oil and natural gas in the country. In 2004, the monthly average of oil production was 2.8 million barrels, while the monthly average of natural gas production was 32 billion cubic feet.
Agriculture and manufacturing also play an important role in the economy of the state. The agricultural outputs of the state are cattle, sheep, wheat, cotton, hogs, soybeans, salt, and corn. The main industrial outputs include transportation equipments, commercial and private aircrafts, food processing, publishing, and chemical products.
Kansas is home to headquarters of many companies, including the Sprint Nextel, Embarq, YRC Worldwide, and Garmin. Sprint Nextel is the largest employer in the state. The current unemployment rate in the state is 6.4%. The state has three tax brackets, ranging from 3.5% to 6.45%, while the sales tax is 6.3%.
