Schools and colleges in Illinois are famous for their quality of teaching and excellent grades. The Illinois State Board of Education regulates public education in the state.
Schools in Illinois
The Illinois State Board of Education lays down academic guidelines for private and public schools, kindergarten through 12th grade, and vocational education. The board evaluates the objectives, necessities and prerequisites of teaching and suggests rules and regulations to the Governor and Illinois General Assembly for the sake of over 2 million school kids in the state.
Local municipalities and their corresponding school districts run separate public schools in the state. However, the ISBE reviews activities of public schools via the Illinois School Report Card.
Education is mandatory from preschool (kindergarten) through the 12th grade, usually but not absolutely divided into three levels of primary and secondary education such as elementary school, junior high school or middle school, and high school. District areas are frequently intricate in their composition. Most of the territories in Illinois are essentially situated in two school districts-the first is for high school and another for junior high and elementary schools. These districts don't essentially have common boundaries. A particular high school might have many elementary districts that serve it, though a number of those feeder districts may serve various high school districts on their own.
Colleges and Universities in Illinois
Implementing the guidelines set by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Illinois has 11 "National Universities". As of August 19, 2010, five of them are graded in the "first level" (i.e. the highest quartile) among the best 500 national universities in the country, as decided by the U.S. News & World Report ratings. These universities are Northwestern University (12), the University of Chicago (8), Illinois Institute of Technology (106), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (39), and Loyola University Chicago (119).
The state is home to over 20 other recognized 4-year public and private universities, and scores of liberal arts colleges throughout the state. Furthermore, under the Illinois Community College System, the state sponsors 49 public community colleges under 39 public community college districts.
