The history of Georgia dates back to pre-Columbian times. By 1560 the local Mississippian culture had completely disappeared.
Pre-Revolutionary History
A century before the revolutionary war began, Georgia was the site of conflict between Spain and England. After series of fighting, the Carolinians and allied Native Americans permanently destroyed the Spanish mission system. After 1704, Spanish force was limited to St Augustine and Pensacola. Coast of Georgia was occupied by the British-allied Native Americans.
During the Yamasee War of 1715-1717, the region was depopulated and by 1724, it was a British colony called Province of Georgia, in honor of King George II. It was founded in 1732 and a large majority of the original settlers were English. In 1752, the colony was handed over to the monarch and Georgia became a crown colony.
Revolutionary War History
Georgia was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against the British rule in American Revolution by signing the Declaration of Independence. The state did not play any significant role in the war, since it was a relatively a new colony. Georgia became the fourth state of United States of America after ratifying the United States Constitution on January 2, 1788. It established its first state constitution in 1777. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 resulted in the resettlement of eastern tribes to Indian reservations, in present-day Oklahoma.
Confederate History
Georgia joined the Confederacy on January 18, 1861. It became a major site of the American Civil War. Major battles were fought at Chickamauga, Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta. On July 1870, it was reseated in Congress and restored to the Union. The state has had five official capitals : colonial Savannah (alternated with Augusta), Augusta, Louisville, and Milledgevillee. In 1868, the capital was shifted to Atlanta.
