Schools and Colleges in Georgia




The schools and colleges in Georgia form the core of the education system in the state. However, there are technical colleges and other institutes of higher learning that play an important part as well.





The Georgia Department of Education looks after the public schools and colleges in Georgia.
The Superintendent of Schools, an elected representative, is the main administrator of the controlling body of the state's education.

Schools in Georgia
In high schools across Georgia students are required to take part in EOCT or End of Course Tests that are multiple choice, regular examinations. The core subjects in these tests are algebra I, biology, geometry, physical science, US history, ninth grade composition and literature, economics and American composition and literature.

These tests are an important part of the education system made up of the schools and colleges in Georgia. The students are tested on particular content skills and knowledge. These exams do not need a minimum score for credits but it is mandatory to complete them.

The scores in EOCTs, taken by the 9th to 12th grade students, make up 15% of the student's grades in particular courses. High school students are also required to obtain passing scores in 4 Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGTs). They are also awarded with diplomas after passing the Georgia High School Writing Assessment exams.

The subjects in the diploma tests are mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. The students are required to take these tests at the start of their eleventh grades so that they can pass before they complete graduation at the 12th grade.

The school students of the 1st to 8th grade in Georgia take the Criterion Referenced Competency Tests.


Colleges and Universities in Georgia
The various institutes of higher learning are important parts of the system of schools and colleges in Georgia. There are 70 public colleges, technical colleges and universities in Georgia along with 45 institutes for higher learning, which are privately owned.

HOPE Scholarship
The HOPE Scholarship is sponsored by the state lottery in Georgia. This is available to every resident of Georgia. However, applicants need to have graduated from their high schools with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and should be students of public colleges in Georgia.
