Before the year of 1960 each of the county of Connecticut had a separate governing seat. There are eight counties in the state of Connecticut. Before the abolition of county governments all the counties were governed by the respective administrative seats. Middletown was the governing seat of Middlesex county, whereas Wiilimantic was the county seat of Windham. New Haven county had its seat at New Haven, while Bridgeport was the county seat of Fairfield county. Rockville was the county seat of Tolland county and New London had its seat at New London. Litchfield was the county seat of Litchfield county. All the counties of Connecticut are today considered as the integral sub-divisions of the state. Once administered by county seats, no county of the state of Connecticut has operational governing bodies. Connecticut state governs the overall affairs of all its eight counties.
