University of the Ozarks, Arkansas, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education west of the Mississippi River.

The University of Arkansas System consists of six main campuses within the state, a medical school, two law schools, statewide research, and several other graduate schools. It also has several community colleges. More than 42,000 students enroll in over 188 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Six main campuses are located in Fayetteville, Little Rock, Monticello, Pine Bluff, and Fort Smith. Arkansas State University System is different from the University of Arkansas System. It comprises ten campuses located across northeast and central Arkansas.

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

The University of Arkansas is located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is a part of the University of Arkansas System, and is a public, co-educational, land-grant, space-grant, research university. It was founded in 1871 as Arkansas Industrial University. It is famous for its agriculture, architecture, creative writing, law school, history, Middle Eastern Studies, and business programs. In 2010, student enrollment for the Fall semester was 21,406. The university offers 214 programs in bachelors, masters, doctoral and law degrees.

Lyon College

Lyon College is located in Batesville, Arkansas. It is the oldest independent college in the state. It is a residential, co-educational, undergraduate liberal arts college and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. It was founded in 1872 and has an area of 136 acres. It enrolls approximately 600 students and is distinguished by the quality of its academic programs.


University of the Ozarks

The University of Ozarks is located at the foot of the Ozarks Mountains in Clarksville, Arkansas. It is a private, four-year liberal arts university. It is the oldest university in the state and is one of the oldest institutions of higher education west of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1834 by Cumberland Presbyterians as Cane Hill College, Cane Hill. The campus stretches 30 acres and enrolls approximately 600 students.

Hendrix College

Hendrix College is located in Conway, Arkansas. It is a private liberal arts college and was ranked 102 of America's Best Colleges by Forbes 2010. It enrolls approximately 1,400 students and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It was founded in 1876 as a primary school called Central Institute. The college covers a total area of 160 acres.
