Arizona has a number of prestigious colleges and universities. The University of Arizona is the first university in the state.

There are three public universities in Arizona that are governed by the Arizona Board of Regents: The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University. In addition to the public universities, the state has a wide network of two-year vocational schools and community colleges. American Indian College, Art Institute of Phoenix, Phoenix School of Law, Prescott College, Central Arizona College, and GateWay Community College are some of the major private colleges in Arizona.

University of Arizona: Located in Tucson, Arizona, United States, the University of Arizona is a land-grant and space-grant public institution of higher education and research. Founded in 1885, it was the first university in the state of Arizona. As of 2009, a total of 38,767 students enroll in the university every year. The academic staff consists of 2,854 members. The university includes the University of Arizona College of Medicine, the only medical school in Arizona that offers doctorate in medicine. The university is governed by the Arizona Board of Regents. Eugene G. Sander is the president of the university.

Arizona State University: Established on February 26, 1885, the Arizona State University is a public research university located in Phoenix, Arizona. It is the largest public university in the United States, with an enrollment of 70,440 students supported by a staff of 2,862 members. It is organized into fourteen divisions and is spread across four campuses: the original Tempe campus, the West campus in northwest Phoenix, the Polytechnic campus in eastern Mesa, and the Downtown Phoenix campus. The university offers programs in engineering, liberal arts and sciences, journalism, nursing, business, law, and public policy. Michael M. Crow is the president of the university.



University of Phoenix: Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the University of Phoenix is a for-profit institution of higher learning. It was founded in 1976 by John Sperling. The university is a wholly owned subsidiary of Apollo Group Inc., and has more than two hundred campuses worldwide. A total of 224,880 students enroll for the various programs in the university. The university confers degrees in over hundred degree programs at the associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Bill Pepicello is the president.
