Phoenix College was established in 1920. Initially, it had just 53 students. It has become a flagship college of the Maricopa Community Colleges. The College is accredited by a body called the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
The various departments at the College are the Office of Academic Affairs, Applied Arts and Human Sciences, Applied Business, Art/Music/Photography/Anthropology, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Communication/ American Sign Language/ Theatre and Film, Custom Training and Education (CTE), Cultural and Applied Social Sciences (C.A.S.S.), Dental, Emergency Medical Technology/Fire Science, English/Humanities/ESL/Creative Writing, Foreign Language, Health Enhancement, Health Information Management, Honors, Industrial Technology, Learning, Technologies and Development, Legal Studies, Liberal Arts, Library, Mathematics, Nursing, Physics, Psychology and Reading. Phoenix College offers 200 degree and certificate programs.
Phoenix College has a Learning Center. The center offers a number of support services such as tutoring, study skills, advertisement/referral, supplemental computer aids, services to at-risk and/or disadvantaged students etc. The Computer Commons facility at the College features Pentium Computers and a number of course-related software.
