In AZ, public schools are categorized into approximately 220 regional school districts which are run autonomously. However, they are administered in most circumstances by nominated county school supervisors.

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction is nominated in member polls held every even year if a presidential poll is not held. This is for a term of four years.

A School District Redistricting Commission was set up in 2005 with the objective of uniting and merging most of these districts.

Colleges in Arizona
Three public universities serve Arizona: Arizona State University, The University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University. These educational institutions are overseen by the Arizona Board of Regents.

Private higher education in the state is controlled by many commercial and multi-site ("chain") universities. Just one conventional (non-profit, single-site, four-year) private college is there in the state and it is Prescott College. The state houses a broad network of two-year community colleges and vocational schools. Previously, these colleges and educational institutions were administered by a distinct Board of Directors. However, the state government shifted nearly the whole supervision power to separate community college districts in 2002. There are 11 community colleges under the Maricopa County Community College District all over Maricopa County and it is one of the biggest in the country.
