The Southern State Community College was formed on August 12, 1993. The College was formed when the Alabama State Board of Education effectively merged with Southern Union State
Junior College, located in Wadley,Valley and Opelika, with Opelika State Technical College in Opelika.
The Southern Union State Community College serves residents of an eight county area of East Central Alabama and neighboring Georgia counties from its campuses in Wadley, Valley and Opelika. The Opelika State Technical College was created by an act of the Alabama State Legislature on May 3, 1963. The Lee County Commission donated 63 acres of land for the college site. The City of Opelika provided access to utility services. The college was given the name Opelika State Vocational Technical Institute on August 22, 1973 by the Alabama State Board of Education.
