Selma University (SU) is a historically African-American university affiliated with the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention. It was founded in 1878 as the Alabama Baptist Normal and Theological School. Its purpose was to train African-Americans to become ministers and teachers.

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Selma University is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts institution. It provides higher education to the African-American constituency of Alabama. The campus is located on 35-acres and it has 12 buildings in total. Some of the buildings at the campus are the Jemison-Owen Auditorium-Gymnasium, the Stone-Robinson Library, and the New Dinkins Memorial Chapel.

The degrees offered at SU are Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science. They are available in various subjects such as English, History, Music, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, Data Processing, Secretarial Science, Liberal Arts/General, Religion, Bible and Theology. Certificate are also obtainable.

Students of Selma University can participate in numerous Athletic Programs, as the college is also a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
