Northwest Alabama, started in Phil Campbell, is the state's first junior college, founded in 1963. Phil Campbell is home to Northwest-Shoals Community College.
Alabama's first Junior College was founded in 1963 as Northwest Alabama State Junior College. The mission of founding this college was to provide access to post secondary education for citizens of the rural counties of northwest Alabama. The Phil Campbell campus is located at a distance of about 35 miles south of the Shoals campus, with easy access from US Highway 43 or Alabama Highway 13.

This College was the first public junior college in the Alabama College System. The college was accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges in 1967. The campus spreads over an area of 101 acres blessed scenic splendour. The campus has 8 separate buildings. The campus offers a number of academic and student services, technical programs and community services.
