The Birmingham – Southern College is a four-year, private liberal arts institution that was founded in 1856. The college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The college was formed with the merger of Southern University (founded in Greensboro, Alabama in 1856) with Birmingham College (founded in Birmingham in 1898). These two institutions were consolidated on May 30, 1918 to form the Birmingham – Southern College.
The various academic programs offered at the Birmingham – Southern College are in Behavorial and Social Sciences, Business, Education, Fine and Performing Arts, Humanities and Science and Mathematics. The Graduate Programs offered at the college are Master of Music, Master of Arts in Public and Private Management. Special Academic Programs are offered in Environmental Studies, Latin American Studies, Leadership Studies, Service Learning, Honors Program, Interim Term/ Contract Learning. The International Programs offered at the college are Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC), Office of International Programs. The Cooperative Programs include Air Force ROTC, Army ROTC, Environmental Studies, Pre-Health, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Law, Pre-Engineering.
The academic calender includes two semesters and a January Interim term. Four units of credit are required in each semester and one credit in each Interim. The College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
