President Barack Obama appealed to voters in the swing state of Ohio on the eve of his Democratic party's convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Speaking in Toledo, Obama told auto workers that his government’s bailout of U.S. car manufacturers was "paying off for America".
The Democratic National Convention kicks off on Tuesday and will feature speeches from First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Bill Clinton as Obama is formally re-nominated as the party’s candidate to take on Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the November 6 elections.
Vice-President Joe Biden struck a similar chord during a campaign visit in Detroit, Michigan, a major hub for car manufacturing, saying: "America is better off today than they left us when they left."
The crowd came alive when he proclaimed the slogan: "Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive."
The three-day Democratic convention follows the Republican National Convention held in Tampa, Florida, last week.
